Shred the spaces, live the dream at Troll Resort
Quesnel, BC — If you've spent your time skiing or snowboarding in southern BC or Alberta, get ready for a shock upon hitting the slopes at Troll Ski Resort, near Quesnel in northern BC.
The surprise is twofold. For one, just how close it really is and two, the amount of space any snow seeker has here. Welcome to the #skinorthbc experience at Troll Resort.
HIT PLAY to start living the ski dream at Troll... there's space waiting for you now
"Growing up in Ontario, it was always a dream for us to have a place at the base of a ski hill, and now we've achieved our dream," explains Ike Lackey, a ski patroller at Troll and the Resort's electrician.
For Ike, his wife Meg and their kids, this is exactly why they are here, to soak up all this space while living out their greatest fantasy.
The Lackey Family is fortunate enough to have a weekend escape place within "Troll Town" directly across the street from the resort, within a community of people who get the value of having all the space in the world to shred.
Here are five good reasons the Lackeys (and so many others) are living their ski dreams at Troll.
Powder for days
"That is one of the biggest things here, when it snows you are able to find fresh lines a week after," explains Ike.
I've been to more than a few resorts in my days where I feel like at any moment someone might run into me, given there are so many people on the slopes at one time. Not here at Troll Resort.
You hit a run like "The Rush", carving up this blue groomer packing a vertical punch with powder for days sitting on its sides. And best of all, no crowds to chew it up.
Bigger than you think
"Troll grows not shows," Ike quips, meaning you can only see about two thirds of Troll from its base.
It's not until you get up on the mountain that the resort grows on you and the mountain shows its full hand.
Over the years within our #skinorthbc efforts, we've been able to present Troll's size in stories like this, where you hop into Troll's Silver Bowl and into another world.
Troll's space means you ski or ride as much as your legs can handle.
Live your ski dream at Troll
Find space to shred and a friendly local scene where you can live the dream, with a ski trip to Troll Resort #skinorthbc
Given all that shredding comes with minimal—if not zero—line ups to get up the mountain, that can translate into some hungry stomachs when lunchtime rolls around.
Get yourself into a pickle
No fear there—cook Donny Ward and his kitchen team are pumping out the tasty fixings from the kitchen found within a classic day lodge log cabin, built by founder Lars Sinclair over 50 years ago.
Try the dill pickle soup if you are after something that will leave you smiling. Yes, dill pickle soup.
"We make all of our foods from scratch here," explains Ward "my great grandmother and great aunts had a homemade cookbook all about soups."
Friendly local scene
Troll is here to please, about a five-hour drive north of Kamloops, less than two hours south of Prince George and 45 mins east of the City of Quesnel.
People who live here appreciate your visit and have no issues striking up conversation on the street, the kind that can quickly turn strangers into new friends.
"Quesnel has a lot of the things we were looking for as a place to call home, including this amazing ski hill," says momma Meg.
Go for a Nordic ski or snowshoe at Hallis Lake before or after your time at Troll (be prepared, it might feel a bit weird for those of us used to the urban rush given the lack of the southern hustle and bustle).
Even more space to come
Troll's space is only about to grow come season 2025-26 with the addition of a whole new mountain of terrain, moving the resort from 35 odd runs to about 70, many of these new runs featuring the steeps and deeps us thrill seekers are looking for.
