Welcome to this story from SnowSeekers' classic collection.
BANFF, AB — Sunshine Village Ski & Snowboard Resort and the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel will once again host some of Hollywood’s biggest stars as one of the season’s hottest environmental fund-raising events returns to the Canadian Rockies, Jan. 12-15, 2012.
The Fairmont Banff Springs Celebrity Sports Invitational raises funds for the Waterkeeper Alliance, an organization that is dedicated to protecting our waterways. Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., Alec Baldwin and other Hollywood top stars will attend the event. The names of other participants will be announced as the event draws closer.
Waterkeeper Alliance is the fastest-growing environmental movement in the world, uniting Waterkeepers who patrol and protect rivers, bays, lakes and streams on six continents—more than 1.6 million square miles of waterways. Waterkeeper Alliance is the leading voice for the world’s waters with roots dating back to 1966, when a concerned group of commercial and recreation fishermen mobilized to reclaim the Hudson River from polluters.
What to expect
The Fairmont Banff Springs Celebrity Sports Invitational, which has raised millions of dollars for environmental protection in recent years, has in the past drawn such Hollywood A-list stars as Glenn Close, Michael Douglas, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Meg Ryan, Dan Aykroyd, Jason Priestley and Martin Sheen.
The stars will spend two action-packed days skiing and competing in fun events at the famous Sunshine Village Ski and Snowboard Resort. Such activities as toboggan/snowshoe races and dual giant slalom races are well within public view to lift ticket purchasers. The event will culminate with a gala dinner at The Fairmont Banff Springs, and concert featuring Michael McDonald.
“Sunshine Village is delighted to once again host Hollywood in support of the Waterkeepers," said Sunshine Village President Ralph Scurfield. "Our resort is recognized for its natural scenic beauty in a protected wilderness. We are very proud of our environmental efforts and are one of North America's leading ski and snowboard resorts in water conservation. Sunshine has demonstrated true leadership with the water and energy-saving features built into new projects such as the new Sunshine Mountain Lodge."
