Canadian Paralympic athletes to watch in Beijing
As the excitement from the Beijing Olympics begins to die down, the Beijing Paralympics is just ramping up. While Paralympic sports don't typically receive the same attention as the Olympics, these sports deserve more attention for the sheer athleticism, innovation and heart displayed by these athletes.
With nearly 750 Paralympic athletes getting set to compete in five different disciplines, there is expected to be about 80 medal events happening at the 2022 Paralympics.
So what does this mean for Canada? It means 49 Paralympic athletes will be representing Team Canada on the global level, led by chef de mission and extreme sit-skiing legend Josh Dueck. Here's a primer on three athletes who are expected to go big this year in Beijing.
Canadian Paralympians to watch at Beijing 2022
Brian McKeever, Para Nordic Skiing
Canada’s most decorated Winter Paralympian (with 14 medals to date) is looking to send off his final Paralympics with a bang. McKeever carried Canada’s flag into the Pyeongchang Olympics and will be competing for the last time in the 2022 Olympics, so expect big things from him this year in Beijing.
Mollie Jepsen, Para Alpine Skiing
The 22-year-old has been blazing through the world cup circuit, standing on the podium in all six of her races and taking home the victory in two of them. Expect that she will be bringing that speed and competitiveness to Beijing as she tries to bring home the gold.
Mollie was able to medal in four out of five of her events in Pyeongchang, so expect big things from her in Beijing as well.
Brittany Hudak, Para Nordic Skiing
Brittany Hudak was born without part of her left arm, but despite that, continues to be a red hot athlete. In 2018, she brought home a bronze medal in the 12.5km standing biathlon event.
Hudak is also a graduate of the social worker program at University of Regina and works in Calgary to support youth and families, so if you are looking for a hero on two skis, she comes pretty close to a real superhero in our books!
