The Town of Revelstoke is steeped in history – a visit to the local museum is an excellent place to explore the town’s past. BRANDON BOUCHER/SnowSeekers < |
REVELSTOKE, BC — Local history plays an important role in Revelstoke Mountain Resort which has a skiing link that dates back to the late 1800s. Hints of earlier ski pioneers can be found everywhere. One of those early pioneers was champion ski jumper, Nels Nelsen, a Norwegian who immigrated to Revelstoke and who contributed greatly to skiing in Western Canada.
Visitors to Revelstoke can visit the Nels Nelsen Historic Area, home of Canada’s first ski jump and they can stay at the brand new lodge on mountain which carries his name, the Nelsen Lodge.
Development continues
The first phase of construction finished last summer which included 59 units with full kitchens and some stellar furnishings. This summer, 102 units in Nelsen Two are being constructed and will be available for the 2009/10 season. Nelsen Two will also include a full service restaurant and cafe.
One of the really unique features to this developing village is the addition of a heli-pad, which will be in the direct centre of the village, an addition which will only furthers the sense of adventure this place offers.
Bookings for the Nelsen Lodge can be made through central reservations at the resort or online at www.thenelsenlodge.com
Town provides more options
The distance between the town and the resort is literally 10 minutes so over the next year or two, as the village develops you may want to stay in town to get in on some of the après or evening action.
“We really do have something for everyone, from B & Bs to that high-end experience, whatever you are looking for when it comes to accommodations is here at some really reasonable rates,” says John Devitt, president of the Chamber of Commerce.
On my visit, I stayed at the Days Inn. Yes the amenities are stellar with free wireless internet and recently renovated rooms, but the thing that really got me excited was that they had waffles! Your budget friendly stay at the Days Inn Revy comes with a free trip to the breakfast bar each morning: toast, cereal and yes, one of Belgium’s best inventions are on the menu.
