Ready to GNAR?! New dates, new snow for Rockies, West Coast

Overnight from Wednesday to Thursday, we saw the addition of a few more:

Mt. Baldy

Meanwhile, Whistler was also graced with snow this week.

We’d like to think that maybe it was Old Man Winter recognizing the passing of one of his most dedicated rivals, Wayne Flann. 

Known to many as Wango, the longtime avalanche forecaster based in Whistler passed away last week. He will be missed by the local Whistler/Sea to Sky community and more broadly in the avalanche community and among those who knew his work.

We also wish to acknowledge the passing of Robb Gaffney, known to skiers and snowboarders for his influential work with Matchstick Productions, the book "Squallywood" and as a co-creator, alongside Shane McConkey, of the epic underground ski game/film G.N.A.R. (IYKYK.)

Let’s take the gift of snow and use it to propel us forward, as we think they would have wanted.

Ski season is closer by the day, with less than 45 days from today, Sept 27 and in both Whistler and the Rockies, preparations are well underway!

New chairlifts, movie premieres

In Whistler, chairlift upgrades continue as the resort installs the first ever eight-person chair in Canada, replacing the former Fitzsimmons six-pack.

At Marmot Basin, work is well underway on the new Knob Chair, a quad that opens up quicker access to the new expert-only terrain in Marmot Cirque.

Meanwhile, Matchstick Productions is airing its newest film at Freshtival in Calgary, October 12-14, and the mountains will soon be ready for us.
