5 B.C. resorts that know how to throw a Spring Break party
B.C., home to the most ski resorts anywhere in Canada, transforms into a winter playground not just for skiers and riders, but outdoor enthusiasts of all stripes. And that includes those who like to party like its 1979 or ’89. The Fernie Retro Weekend is just one of dozens of events happening slope-side this winter, right around the time of the much-needed Spring Break season. There are also film festivals, thrilling ski races of the traditional and non-traditional kind, plus craft beer and wine tastings.

Whistler Blackcomb
Fire and Ice Show, Whistler Blackcomb (until March 25)
Every Sunday evening until March 25, watch as some of the best skiers and snowboarders perform daring feats and put on a thrilling all-ages show. Pro athletes will take to the slopes to show off their best twists, flips, and air jumps through a ring of fire. The free event at Whistler also features music from a live DJ, a fire-spinning performance, and a spectacular fireworks show closing out the evening. 25th Annual Telus Winter Classic, Whistler Blackcomb (March 9 – 10)
Hosted by The Whistler Blackcomb Foundation, Whistler’s legendary fundraising event will celebrate its 25th year on March 9 and 10. The philanthropic event is a fun-filled weekend of raising money to give back to the Whistler community. Some of the weekend’s festivities include exciting ski events, wine and food tastings, and live and silent auctions. On March 9, check out the Whistler Winetastic — an evening of sampling wine, microbrews, and appetizers from local restaurants. Coca-Cola Tube Park, Whistler Blackcomb (Open until April 22)
Blackcomb Mountain’s tube park is the perfect family activity for both kids and adults who are young at heart. It also makes the ideal way for those who aren’t quite ready to snap on a pair of skis to get comfortable on the slopes. Enjoying the park is as easy as grabbing an inner tube and heading up the lift to one of the seven available tube lanes. The lanes vary in length and speed depending on your desire for adventure. Kicking Horse
Superberm Banked Slalom, Kicking Horse Mountain Resort (March 17 – 18)
Get decked out in your best ‘80s ski gear and head to Kicking Horse Mountain Resort in Golden, B.C. for the Superberm Banked Slalom race. Whether you’re a novice, experienced, or superstar skier, have fun putting your skills to the test on a challenging race course. The course is a downhill “Superberm” mountain biking trail full of exhilarating twists and turns that are suitable for racers of all ages. Each participant will be timed as they go through the course and the fastest skier wins. The event will also include several prizes – including one for best ‘80s attire, live entertainment, and food. Fernie
Fernie Mountain Film Festival, Fernie Community Centre (Feb. 23 – 24)
Enjoy a moonlit ski session while taking in the sight of B.C.’s night sky. SilverStar Mountain Resort offers night skiing every Friday and Saturday from mid-December to the end of March for skiers of all skill levels. The crystalline slopes with be lit up with twinkling lights and the trails will be well-groomed to provide the ultimate night skiing adventure.
