Lots of snow means Opening Day moves up a day

CALGARY, AB — Substantial snowfalls over the weekend mean that Sunshine Village will open Thursday, Nov. 17 with as many as four lifts. That’s a day earlier than planned.
“It’s looking amazingly positive,” said John Scurfield, Senior Vice-President Sales, Marketing and Resort Operations after touring the slopes. “With all this new snow, we’ll be able to open Thursday, for sure.”
It was a banner weekend for snowfall at Alberta’s most popular ski and snowboard resort. Fully 40 cms of fresh snow fell in 48 hours, bringing the settled snow pack up to 69 cm. And more is on the way for this week, making for a potentially epic start. (Skiers and riders are advised to use caution; early season conditions mean there are some unmarked natural hazards.)
Reduced prices will be in effect
Sunshine expects to open with four lifts: the Strawberry Express high-speed quad, WaWa, Jackrabbit and Wolverine, as well as the ski-out from the village to Goat’s Eye. As conditions evolve, Sunshine will provide an update on lift status, as well as a list of runs that are expected to be available. Reduced prices for opening day will be in effect.
Sunshine is famous for its legendary all-natural champagne powder snow and its unique snow farming technique, which uses 35 km of snow fencing to capture the snow on the resort’s three big mountains.
This season is expected to bring more record snowfalls, thanks to the lingering La Nina weather effect. You can watch Sunshine’s progress on their mountain cams. And check back frequently to our conditions page for updates on the snow pack.
